Welcome to Spring 2010 CSP

In this course students develop a self-directed, unified body of work as a culminating project for their art studies. We will concentrate on developing research-based, sustained investigations to up the ante on the work you have done in other classes. Students will be asked to consider their work in the context of current concerns in art and contemporary culture. Readings, slide shows, field trips, critiques and presentations will provide a basis for your studio work, which may be executed in any media and in any combination of image, text, object, environment, video, live performance and/or sound. Proposals for the term's work will be due the second week of class.

This course blog will be used to gather and present information of common interest. Start and maintain a course blog of your ownto record and share ideas, imagery development, research, responses to readings, discussions, critiques and field trips, as well as the general evolution of your studio work. Even if you already have other blogs , make one dedicated to your work in this class alone. You can use Blogger or Wordpress or another. Email the url to me and I will link it to this blog.

Conduct regular research of contemporary artists relevant to your work via art journals, NY Times Friday reviews (available online and weekly in class), e-flux, websites and other sources and post to your personal class blog. You will be required to speak about the artists you research at least once during the term (see course schedule).

Week 7 & Week 8

Thursday, May 14, is a work day. I will not be in class but available during my drop-in office hours at 1pm. Come to the lecture at PAM at 6 and happy hour after!

Week 8: Tuesday is another "research roundup" with NEW (to you) artists presented to the group. Be prepared to talk about how these new influences relate to what you are doing now.

Thursday we will have a mini in-progress crit, a time to restate your plans for your final portfolio: what's changed from your initial proposal, how do you envision it all coming together? What will you focus on for the next two weeks?

Weeks Five and Six: Mid-Term Critiques

As scheduled on the syllabus, our mid-term crits will be held on 4/30 and 5/5. People who were in class on 4/28 signed up for a slot. Oddly enough (!), the 5/5 slots filled up first so people who have not yet signed up will be critiqued tomorrow, Thursday 4/30. Thursday people: have all your work, sketches, visual references & etc. (everything you have that will help us understand your project) up and be ready to talk first thing.

Week 2: Proposals Due April 7

Bring your work proposals (one page word-processed and/or posted on your blog) to class on Tuesday. You should have your space set up and spend the class period on Tuesday working. I will meet with you individually about your proposed work plans.

On Thursday, April 9, be ready to present brief info about 3 new artists you have found that relate to the work you will be doing in class. Post these on your individual blogs.

There is an online version of the week's reading, "The World in Three Aisles," at www.panix.com/~footage/harpers.pdf.
